Throughout my life, I’ve accumulated a good size bucket list. Skydiving, swimming with dolphins, being a Price is Right contestant, and illustrating a children’s book have all been at the top of my list. Since childhood, I’ve always been the type of person interested in drawing and anything art related, so illustrating a book seemed fitting. For years the opportunity never seemed to present itself for one reason or another, until this year.
As a designer for Brand Eleven Eleven, I have the pleasure of working with all sorts of great people. One of my favorites is local author, Ron Knight. He is known for such novels as 2-10, Middle Room, and most recently the children’s novel AC Heroes. When I was approached to illustrate AC Heroes, I was thrilled. I kept my cool, but inside, I was brimming over with excitement. Excited to help Ron and Brand Eleven Eleven promote such a great idea, and fulfill something that I’ve wanted to do for some time now.
Upon sketching the characters based on Ron’s descriptions, they seemed to come to life. The story is based on four children (the AC Heroes) in an aftercare program who are sent to another world to save our classic books. They are faced with all sorts of problems such as the villains Ink Worm and F-Cat. Ink Worm happens to be one of my favorite characters. He’s pretty funny looking and has the ability to shoot ink on people, eat dirt from underneath trees and destroy forests. Aside from Ink Worm, all the characters have really cool abilities and once again, Ron’s imagination has out done itself.
We have such an incredible team here at Brand Eleven Eleven and we all worked really hard at making this book possible. I hope everyone gets a chance to enjoy AC Heroes as much as I enjoyed doing the illustrations. Share it with a child in your life or enjoy it for yourself. Definitely a really fun read!
